Query on Current Lead Time for CEng Application Assessments

I have two mentees who are in the process of applying for CEng registration. They submitted their applications a couple of months ago, but the assessments have not yet been carried out. Could you please advise on the current lead time for CEng application assessments? Many Thanks.

  • Well a smidgen over 1% - but the point is well made.

And yes, IfSE does have a published schedule - published to those of us assessors anyway. But I think that any member who asked for details of the submission deadlines would be told what they are.

I perform the CPD assessor role for both The IET and IfSE, and I know which one takes me more time!

  • I have never heard of a volunteer CPD assessor role in the IET ... what is that as CPD is only asked about at PRI and a small (a couple of dozen or so) members randomly asked to produce a CPD record for audit purposes annually.

CPD is taken more seriously in some institutions that are far more technical in nature (I suspect) and require significant keeping up to ensure competence. The IET is not what I joined (The IEE) now !

  • Here you go: CPD Advisor

The Engineering Council has changed the guidance, so its a much more significant number of records to be audited now. Easy for smaller institutions with less registrants. More of a challenge for the IET with many more registrants.

Discussion on the CPD requirements and how that compares around the industry and with other qualifications is an whole different discussion thread.

  • I've replied to a couple of messages in this post, but for those who stumble across this thread while waiting on their own application, here's the entire timeline of my application now that it's complete:

    • 12 November 2025 - Application submitted, fee paid.
    • 13 March 2026 - Passed 'Registration & Standards Department' check stage
    • 7 May 2026 - Passed 'Pre-Interview Assessment Panel' check stage
    • 25 June 2026 - I was called and offered a date for PRI.
    • 15 July 2026 - attended remote PRI
    • 19th August 2026 - Received notification of successful CEng application, request to pay Engineering Council Entrance Fee (paid same day)
    • 27th August 2026 - Received certificate and registration number from the Engineering Council

While timescales are dependent on backlogs and availability of assessors/interviewers with matching backgrounds, hopefully this gives a snapshot of the process as it currently stands.

  • Thank you for this ML, gives a good insight into the current wait times - and may I also congratulate you on your achievement!

Coincidentally, I recieved notification myself yesterday that my own application has passed the "Registration & Standards Department" check stage, with the timeline therefore following similar to your own, though probably a month of an improvement in the wait time - here's how mine is looking (same format as yours):

    • 01 May 2026 - Application submitted, fee paid.
    • 01 September 2026 - Passed 'Registration & Standards Department' check stage (+ 4x months)

(Just providing this info for everyone else's benefit on this thread)

    Patience is a virtue!
