Not JUST a Virtual Club

Just to say that since the new forums started with photos (if we want) and real names I for one have found this club has gone beyond the virtual - and all the better for it. I've just had my third IET event this year where at least one person has come up to me and said "Hello, you're Andy aren't you? We've never met in real life" - particularly impressive this time as it was someone (hello Garethsmiley) who lives 3,000 miles away from me! I cannot recommend this highly enough as a way of meeting other engineers.

Of course, I quite understand that some or many members won't want their photos up for all sorts of reasons, but even then it's still possible to spot names on conference / seminar lists. Definitely another really good reason to join in to these discussions. yes

Cheers,

Andy
  • I've found a nice guide on copyright in web loaded images for the UK https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/481194/c-notice-201401.pdf

For the rest of the world, who knows!

If there's going to be an update to the site at any point it might be worth suggesting that a comment is added to the photos and videos pages?

Thanks for the advice re "share with the sitewide gallery"!

As my wife edits (amongst other things) magazines I overhear some very scary conversations about this issue - she's learnt by bitter experience to question every single photo she's sent for publication. We know of one small UK charity that was forced to close due to the amount of compensation (of the order of £10,000!) they had to pay for using a single copyright image on their website without permission - really, really annoying, the law can be a blunt instrument at times (they'd taken the photo down immediately they were notified, and they did offer an apology but it was refused). And as you say, copyright owners can now find these things automatically.

    I like the cartoon!

    Cheers,

    Andy

P.S. I'm very happy for my photos on the site to be used, provided they are credited, and provided the photos of my son playing guitar / bass include a link to his Facebook page and a note that he is available for Christmas parties, Weddings, Bar Mitzvahs, etc at a very reasonable rate wink
  • I love John Atkinson's cartoons! smiley He posts new cartoons on his website quite regularly at http://wronghands1.com

    Today's cartoon is this:

Thank you for posting the PDF re copyright laws etc. It's very interesting reading...

I'm commissioned by a local business to take photos and create images for them so in my case I still retain copyright of the images but they have exclusive licence to use them as they see fit. As the business owner is a friend of mine, I also allow him to use the images for commercial profit too, i.e. if he wants to use the images or photos I take for the business on saleable merchandise etc. There are many different licences relating to what you can and cannot do with copyrighted images so it's always best to check and if in doubt, don't use it!

Re the charity that had to close, I think that's a bit mean... sad especially if they'd complied and removed it once notified. Most copyright owners will issue a cease and desist first and if ignored will then take a more legal approach.

We'll take a look at placing additional reminders across relevant areas of the community but most of the disclaimer information etc can also be found within the Terms and Conditions of use when you create an account. Always worth adding reminders though! wink
  • I see that the gallery tells you how many views a photo has had. I found it quite interesting to note that my old photo had 123 views and my newer one, not yet a year old, 268! I'm intrigued as to who all these viewers of my ugly mug are.  Or does a view get registered with every post?
  • That new photo's really nice Michael! I must get a more interesting one than mine sometime...even though it is what I generally look like when people on here meet me.
