Blown AC - AC Adaptor

I hope you can help me.

I have a Broil King BBQ which has 3 under lid lights as well as 9 LED lights on the dials.

Now in the 4 years I have owned this BBQ I have replaced 4 AC -AC Adaptors, all supplied by Broil King.

The adaptors they send all blow from inside out, and I have attached the images.

Some of you have probably seen something like it before and immediately have an idea as to why.

My thoughts are, lack of ventilation and they are packed with a black resin.

The original Adaptor supplied was 1600mA as were 2 replacements, but the latest one to fail was 1700mA

Unfortunately I do not have a working adapter to enable me to measure the current drawn, but I do remember taking the measurement last year and thought the 1700mA was too low.

Something sticks in my head that the current drawn was 2900mA, but I could be wrong.

  • Thanks for letting us know how you got on - it should be a sight more reliable than the previous solution - but that's not hard. Is it getting warm ?

  • No, not at all. Broil King UK are now going to speak to Eastern Transformers & Equipment in Bury St. Edmunds in view of getting them to custom make a transformer for them.

My solution of buying a transformer, adding my own twin & earth flex on the input and tails on the output and then enclose it in an enclosure does look a bit D.I.Y. but it cannot be seen as it is in the cupboard which houses the gas bottle, and it has found a solution to the problem.

As a 'thank you', Broil King have gifted me a very generous addition to my BBQ, which I was more than happy to contribute something towards, but they wouldn't have it, they have sent it to me F.O.C.

I just don't get why Canada have not resolved the issue which has be ongoing for 4 years, but more prevalent in the last 2 years, prevalent because the sales on this particular model has increased over the last 2 years.

  • Sounds like all good result all round really and perhaps some future work  for a UK transformer company too.

Enjoy the bbq weather while it lasts, its raining here !

The failure mechanism could well be interrupting an inductive load is causing a high voltage spike that destroys the adapter.  Good designs include Snubbers to absorb the energy but sometimes they are omitted.  Avoid this failure as follows;  only plug the adapter into a switched mains socket. When you have finished with your BBQ first switch off at the mains socket.  Second, wait one minute. Third; Unplug the adapter from the mains socket.
