Which areas of Technology are you interested in?

Is your interest how the Romans built roads and aquaducts or how the World wide web came about?

I will look all types of infrastructure, buildings and machinery and wonder how it was built but my main interest is Automation & Control. This is a relativly new are of technolgy and I sometimes get the reaction "It doesn't work on steam". However the rate of developement and the lack of corporate interest in last weeks products let alone last years means that we could lose information on recent developments faster than the Victorin era.

So what interests do we have in this community?

John Pittwood

  • What I intended to say was which areas of the History of Technology are you interested in

  • All,

The topic I am interested in, and something that I am doing active research on, is the history of communications in Ireland, from the earliest forms of communication such as the artwork at Newgrange to the latest and newest communication systems in Ireland in 2012. This also covers my favorite subject which is the old telegraph and telephone systems that connect Ireland to the UK and the rest of the world.

    Regards

    Derek
  • I too am interested in the history of communications systems, specifically the early international wireless era of the Empire Wireless Service.

Now that I am retired I intend to register for a research degree in order to nail down a specific topic of study. I will not be doing it for the qualification, but to establish a framework in which to study to provide some focus and a definite 'end-game' for the research.

    That's the plan anyway!

I chair the Defence Electronics History Society and edit its monthly e-Newsletter, eDEN which carries 150 pages/month on subjects all across historic military electronics.

Thank you - yes, am aware. Cited in my PhD thesis, as I recall.

  • John Wilcock:

Look at Marconi's 1922 applications. Although he was primarily interested in radio,in his New York presentation 1922 he made the remark that electromagnetic signals should be reflected by metallic objects and have applications in radar.

Although rather expensive (£100 I believe), Galati's "100 Years of Radar" (2016) covers the work of the Marconi Company on early radar in the 1920s and 1930s.  Might be worth checking out.  Also, I have not looked at them but radar material in the Marconi archives (catalogue at http://www.bodley.ox.ac.uk/dept/scwmss/wmss/online/modern/marconi/marconi.html) may also be of interest.

  • History of telecommunications and military communications from the mid-19th century onwards.  I know Derek and many other posters here well.  For those of you who are interested, my PhD thesis on the early history of wireless communications in the UK is online at http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/4431/
  • With regards to the history of Technology my interest is in the communication history of Ireland and how “SHE-Ireland” contributed to the evolution and revolution in communication. I am really interested in the early years of the communication revolution from 1851 to the late 1890s when Ireland made its mark in telegraph history and in the years 1895 to 1921 when Ireland had its most profound impact on wireless communication. However all communication history holds my interest. I know Dr. Donard DeCogan who is a world renown historian and expert on all things associated with communication, I also have a great friendship with Dr. Elizabeth Bruton  who is a  renown   expert on Communication History, especially Marconi. Together, along with Dr. Donard DeCogan we promote the history of communication through the IET HOT and our own group ICRG.

At the age of 84 my priority is heritage and local history.

I started with a 5 year apprenticeship at the Osram GEC lamp works.

When we stopped making things I had 30 happy years at BSI.

I can tell you that when Mrs Marconi brought her son to the US, she stopped over in Wimbledon, attended mass at my church, the Sacred Heart, and there is talk of Marconi conducting experiments on Wimbledon Common.

    More power to your elbow.
