Hello and Welcome!

Hi everyone

I thought I'd start this off smiley

I'm Lisa and I'm a member of staff at the IET. You'll see me all over MyCommunity as I'm one of the Community Relationship Managers looking after some of our communities and their online presence.

I also write a personal blog on MyCommunity called The Geekette where I share my geeky fascination with all things teccy and engineering related.

So welcome to the group and  I look forward to chatting with you!

Lisa
  • Hi John

Yes this is still a work in progress so we're looking to other group members to help us make this a thriving and interesting community! wink

So please feel free to start discussions or add any events and files, photos videos etc that the group would be interested in.

I'm aware that we've just missed the Workplace Pride Conference that took place in June but what other large events are out there for LGBT Engineers? If you know of any, please feel free to add them to the Events area!

    Hi Everyone,

I'm Hayley and I'm an engineer at the MOD. Its great that this community is finally open and active. I don't know of any specific LGBT events aimed at engineers, other than the recent event held by the Royal Academy of Engineering.

  • Hello!

I'm William/Billy/Amélie.  I'm the chair of AWE Pride, which we set up and launched on the 23rd September. I felt I couldn't remain in the role of the chair without being open about why, so I came out at work by presenting as Amélie at the launch. I haven't transitioned, but spend a lot of my spare time 'en femme' and only occasionally present as Amélie at work. I generally use Billy (Billie) at work, until such a time (if as and when) I legally change my name.

I was hoping I would log on (as I to be honest rarely do), to find a thriving community here.  The IET sponsor interengineeringlgbt.com/ so I'm surprised to see so little here (or am I just missing things).

I will cautiously volunteer to help kick things off properly with an IET Network with what I'm learning from setting up my work LGBT+ Network.  Anyone fancy helping?

  • Hi Billy and welcome to the network!  Anything you can bring to the group from your role in AWE Pride would be much appreciated!  In particular it would be great to get an event organised - ideally outside London where there are fewer opportunities.  If you have any ideas - or paerhaps a joint event with AWE Pride let me know and I will be happy to help.

  • Joe,

We're being rather pro-acative as a network and we already have the seeds of something brewing for September.  The plan was to link up with InterEngineering, which would by default allow the IET access, given the IET sponsor InterEngineering.

It would be brilliant to have direct IET involvement, but I'm going to need to work through the politics of it before giving out much more detail.  I'll happily link up via personal messages, with a little more info.

    Billy
  • Thanks Billy, I'll contact you directly and see if I can contribute to a joint event in some way.

  • Happy New Year!

Hello, don't think I've properly introduced myself in here before, I'm Peter (or Pete, I'm not fussed either way).

I've been a railway signal engineer for 15 years, having joined the railway not long after I left the Royal Navy. For the that last 6 or so years I've been specialising in railway system safety and currently work for Bechtel on the Crossrail Programme.

I'm passionate about diversity and inclusion, particularly for the LGBT+ communities and have been/am currently involved in a number of different diversity groups. I'm one of the co-founders and secretary of InterEngineering and have more recently taken the lead for liaison with the Professional Engineering Institutions. That's something I'll have a bit more time for, once we've successfully launched 'B-Proud', Bechtel's first LGBT+ Business Resource Group.

Hope 2019 will see a bit more activity in here. It has to be said its been rather quiet up until now.

    Pete

  • Hi Pete,

Thanks for joining us and good luck with B-Proud!
