Shall we make some changes to the LGBTQ+ group?

Hello LGBTQ+ community!

We’ve noticed that this community isn’t as active and engaged as we’d hoped it would be so we’d appreciate your thoughts on how we can turn that around. Why do you think that it’s not very active? Is it something about the group itself or the technology that stops you from participating?

The team and I, along with Jo Foster our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Manager, have had a few ideas and suggestions that we’d like feedback on so please have a read through and let us know which of these ideas you think we should implement. Or of course if you have any suggestions of your own please get in touch and let us know.

We could:

1.    Close the IET LGBTQ+ group and move the discussions to a new overarching category on the theme of diversity and inclusion and hosted in our site-wide public forum space. The new category would also include discussions from the Women’s Network and other existing groups that also come under the banner of diversity and inclusion. Conversations in the new forum category will be publicly visible and therefore have the opportunity to attract a wider audience and increased engagement.

2.    Keep the group exactly as it is but be more active within it. Currently the group is a public group within the online community so all discussions etc can be read by the public but as they are within a group, you only find out about the discussions if you visit the group itself.

3.    Keep the group but change it to a private group (so you need approval by an admin to join it and content within is only visible to members of the group) So you can discuss topics etc that you’d prefer not to be visible to the public but then have a sitewide forum area as well for topics that you don’t mind discussing in public.

We’ve also created a poll on the group's homepage for you to indicate which of the suggestions you’d prefer.

Happy to take private feedback either by PM or via my email address of Lmiles@theiet.org

If you have any questions at all then please don’t hesitate to get in touch!

  • Hi Lisa,

Before making changes to the group, perhaps we need to understand what the group is here for. I discovered it existed when I was looking for my local community group after helping out at a local event. Since then, I've not had any reason to post anything here. I'm quite active in LGBTQ+ communities. I'm on the steering group of my company's LGBTQ+ employee network, I help to organise a monthly social event for the public where I live, and my partner is a drag queen who performs at regular shows. Most of the activities outside of work are coordinated on public Facebook pages.

If you want to see this group be more active, what should it offer that will engage members to use it?

    Hello,

did anyone attend the lgbtSteminar 2020 in Birmingham couple weeks ago ?

It was excellent, highly recommended if you can attend  next year
  • I was at LGBTSTEMinar 2020. Second one I have attended. It was indeed a really good day!

    Hi Lisa,

any idea where members in this lgbt forum are based ?

are people from across the UK (or even further afield?

If we know where members are mainly based in, a meetup could be a progress to help direct the future of the forum/group?

but if people are located far apart, it is almost impossible to meet due to costs and distance.

    Hello again

I am based in the Midlands, if anyone likes to meet up, we could have a chat and see how things could develop.

    Ah cool.

we should at least say hi next time .

    Haha

I think its Oxford next year

  • Hi all,

I'm a uni student at the University of Leeds and are on the committee for both the LGBT+ society and the Electrical Engineering Society (an on-campus group). As such I could help facilitate a meetup at the uni (societies get to use the rooms at uni for free).

Would people be interested in this?

Yes I do if it's in the weekend , due to a few hours of distance travel .

it could be even more appealing if perhaps we could include visits like the local sceince/engineering museums, steam railway etc

    open to suggestions

    It's a great start ! Thank you
  • I just remembered that the society is going to help run a CPD session sometime in march (will check on the date)...
