Smart Meters - Now a shortage (of display units)

Back in November, we had smart meters fitted in an investment property owned by my wife.

The two meters went in, the Engineer kindly fitted an isolator which I had ready to hand and then advised that he was out of internal displays, but that one would follow in a few weeks.

Emails, phone calls and 6 months later have just been advised that rather like airline seats, the supplier had not ordered the same number of internal displays as Smart meters and now that they have changed to fitting SMETS2 meters they do not have any displays available!

Problem is that both meters are fairly inaccessible and whilst both communicate for billing purposes are not that easy to read due to the requirement to hold a torch in one hand, a pen and paper in the other and with the third, press the appropriate key button to obtain a reading.

So, after today's call from the supplier in response to a formal complaint, the house is on the list for a SMETS2

Of course it discriminates, as does the higher tariffs on prepay meters.

Wealthy prosumers get paid feed-in then claim renewal heat payments for the heat pumps that use the electricity there PV panels produce then leave the heating on 24/7 including when they are on holiday, whilst other people cannot afford to heat their homes.

What? Have you gone mad? Do you have any empirical evidence to back up such a claim?

No, I've seen similar "antics" from those ab"using" the RHI scheme. One site makes 8p per kWh over what the wood chip and plant costs to run and includes heating in with the monthly rent of property whose tenants regulate temperature by opening the windows thinking they're getting one over the landlord. She's laughing. Another example is kiln wood drying getting paid to burn wood to dry wood that gets put through its own burner............... What do you think heats the big chicken sheds and why the grower is prepared to invest £500k on wood chip? I've just remembered inspecting a glasshouse complex and so much for approved wood source, green sprigs of leylandi in with all the bark and "steaming" in storage..........

    Shirley you've seen similar?

Do those who pay by cheque or over the Post Office counter get the “discount” for paying by direct debit?

No. So has anybody argued that this discriminates against the elderly or disabled (two protected characteristics)?

Surely, forcing elderly or disabled people to go down the Post Office to pay their bills would be discrimination.  How is offering them a discount for paying the bills without having to leave their homes discrimination?
  • To go completely off the subject, but continuing the ambling discussion, the renewal heat imitative is partly responsible for the current state of affairs in Northern Ireland.

One thing for sure, some wealthy people are doing very nicely out of the renewal heat imitative with their heating running 24/7 very profitably, along with payments from their feed in tariffs.

Although the NI had their own peculiar version of the RHI scheme - most others don't suffer from anything like the same flaws.

you can't get away from the fact that smart meters only benefit the suppliers

A bit odd then that this whole process is being driven by the government (who presumably have some interest in keeping prices low for voters) - and we see the same things abroad even in areas were there isn't the competitive market for electricity supply we have here.

  • Well at least there is one consulation.

Very few of us are daft enough to believe we live in a fair society.

  • I suppose that if you are worried about the parasitic losses of USB sockets you can leave something plugged into them 24/7 to justify having them by using them 24/7.

So you could leave a smart meter remote unit plugged into your USB sockets, if you can get one.
