European double sockets

HI All

1) Does anyone know if a European double socket face plate fits a standard UK double socket back box?

2) I assume these will need extra deep back boxes if they do?

3) I am getting sent over to Germany (Berlin) soon to do some office type electrical install work because it seems that all of the trades are off on holiday or something? Does anyone on the forum know if the trades all go off in Germany soon or if perhaps this is a local supply problem where all of the German staff for their usual electrical installer company are off on holiday. It is interesting that they cannot get local companies to do the office fit out and they're definitely paying us over the odds to do the work instead; this is a multinational company that we often do work for and the purchase order is from our usual lot here in the UK, so no worries with payment.

4) Will the wholesalers sell anything to anyone?

Kind Regards

Tatty
  • yep - the Germans  go

"Mein Gott !! , Rot fur Fase 1 !!"  when looking at old UK wiring,  but the 'wow' feeling of incredible danger  is the same on both sides.

Which is why for the last decade or two all of us on both sides now use brown for phase 1 and stripy earths in all new works, but in older German buildings you will see odd red singles, black lives and grey neutrals..

Data cable is the same (American) standard everywhere as far as I can tell.

I agree. From what I've read recently, ANSI TIA-568 equates to BS EN 50173-1 so I wouldn't be at all surprised if Germany used something like DIN EN 50173-1 which was a word for word translation.

I have head that the Germans did have a habit of putting two sockets on one cable (as the old Ethernet standards only used 2 of the 4 pairs) - but I presume that approach is long since dead these days.
