Green energy that isn't.

The myth about "green" electricity. From a respected organ.

I know we can have quite miserable weather at times in this country.  But when was the last time we went for 2 weeks without either sunny or windy days?

But if we intend to go all renewable, we will need to think properly about energy storage.  We currently have a handful of pumped storage hydro stations, and a tiny amount of battery storage.  There are all sorts of possibilities (flow batteries, compressed air, hydrogen, and so on), but we don't seem to be taking much interest in any of them in this country.

That's because there is no money in it.

Same would apply to all so-called green generation if they were not subsidised.

It is no miracle that has caused the building of wind farms and solar panels everywhere nor high aspirations, it is money and the consumer is paying through the nose for it.

Take your most recent "read" (ie not estimated) bill, totalise the kWh and divide by the number of days it covered and divide by 24 and see what your average load is.....

    Mine was 0.287 kW.

I have planning permission to build a 52 m2 flat above my workshop. It will be constructed to exceed current energy standards but as my local council do not offer 5 years rate free if Passivhaus certified, I won't be seeking certification, as I feel that this cost would preferably be spent on better materials/workmanship etc.

  • Over a 20-odd year period ours has been about 2/3 kW. I have no idea why it is so high - I blame Mrs P. ?
