Minimum Voltage at incoming supply point

Retired now and not up to date with reg’s since 16th. Helping advise a friend. Currently they have 100amp single phase supply and whilst the no load voltage is up at around 238 volts, as the circuit is loaded, voltage drops off substantially. Even with a load of 50 amps, ie, half the supply fuse rating, voltage is slightly below the -6% limit, at around 215 volts, further load simply pushes voltage significantly lower, and by extrapolating measured data, it would be nearer 170 volts with a load of 100 amps, is this acceptable? I plan measuring Ze and pfc this week as a guide perhaps to supply loop impedance and, which I suspect must be causing this excessive drop. I’m aware of the ESQCR reg’s although need to update myself, but are there any other regulations that apply?

  • Going off at a tangent, are these ground or air source heat pumps?

  • Whether there is actual correlation between ASC and fuse size will depend on the DNO. It is done in some places on the continent with an adjustable circuit breaker set for the ASC. It is harder with standard fuse sizes.

  • Horrible air ones that of course offer less energy output than put in, with a COP of just 1:1 at ambient of +3 to +5 c ambient, and frequent energy using defrost cycles too.

From the OP's comment on passing the 16th, a re-read of 130-07-01 from Chapter 13, Fundamental Principles, would be my starting point in writing a report before I completely destroyed the case I was trying to make..........

  • Yes, happy with that, although now only have a copy of 17th to hand, and in there it's covered in Ch 13, starting 131.

So the swimming pool one isn’t going to perform well if it is running overnight to spread the load.

Has the house had a major refurbishment with a serious upgrading of the insulation?

What tariff is in place? Is it economy seven, because I cannot figure out what the best tariff would be?

  • The forum waits patiently (as always) for the maximum power requirement calculations from the consumers friend. It normally takes a DNO a short while to process this figure, but in this case it seems likely there are no figures to check, so further investigation is reqd.

  • If due to load restrictions and with poor efficiency of Air Source during a cold night, the best Tariff may be a Gas one.....  ?

    I'll get my coat!

  • Yes, house has had a major upgrade, including insulation, and I agree, pool load time spreading, particularly during the “warmer” nights,  should be possible (and use any advantages of economy 7 too perhaps), but I’ll be advising them separately on that as part of general home energy plan advice (a pet subject of mine, another hobby in retirement, and included me taking the C&G level 3 “Energy Efficiency for Domestic Heating” course. venue, Potterton Boilers, followed by associated seminars at the Building Research Establishment and heat pump seminars at Mitsubishi). Perhaps I  should start a separate  “Pro’s and Con’s of Domestic Air Sourced heat pumps thread if there is not one already), the things we do in retirement!

My thoughts too Clive, do dislike keeping all eggs in one basket with home energy, but no mains gas here, which of course leaves bulk storage gas tank or oil, and I'll be looking at those options as part of home energy advice. Not something they'll want to hear perhaps after just paying out over £10k for pool heat pumps! Are you really an "ancient mariner", or simply have a connection with old boats? I run the sailing programme for a Sailing Trust, so guess I'm perhaps an "anciaent mariner" too!
