Historical British Educational Film. Mummy and Daughter Change a Fuse Wire.

A delightful old film. How times have changed.

To be fair, though  - swapping out a plug or rewiring a fuse aren't life skills anymore  - as we don't need them. We may lament the passing,  but they are hardly relevant today, I guess

So has fixing things become a thing of the past too?

No. 2 granddaughter named me "Grandpa Fixit", which pleases me greatly, except that I can be called upon to fix anything and everything.

If nobody fixes things, that doesn't leave much for electricians.

  • With regard to the plug wiring, I was taught in the US (where they still use those wrap around terminals  a lot) to twist the wire STRANDS anticlockwise, then wrap clockwise round the terminal. It means that tightening the screw will not cause stray strands to pop out.  It's been very useful even recently with some older appliances that were fine but needed new flex

60 Amp fuse wire is just slightly smaller in diameter than a solid piece of 2.5mm2 copper wire I believe.

    Table 533.1.

  • And the 60Amp fuse wire is just a bit bigger than a single 1.5mm2 copper wire. (Probably closer in size than the 2.5mm2 copper wire).

  • Zoom,

weekend quiz, what about ratings of fusing currents of the common SI cable sizes and rupturing capacities comparison for this weeks quiz topic?

Don`t forget the rating comparison of cig pack silver foil as common use in plugtops too!

Ah! But it is tinned, helping to identify a pukka job, rather than a repair with stripped twin and earth cable.

It also looks better for when you nip out to the van and return with what is obviously the fuse wire to use.

  • A couple of years ago I stripped out a lighting circuit in some flats and the fuse wire protecting the 1.0 mm cable was a bit of 2.5 mm.

I am sure we all have had similar experiences.
