Hello from the desk at home- writing lessons

hello,

Well, I suppose one of the good things about being stuck at home without a virus is that I can at last log on to this forum during the day again.

My company asked us, some time ago, to prepare personal resilience plans so I've plenty to do here. They have now asked as many of us as possible to work from home and whilst I do have to go in to fix broken electrical things, have skype meetings and access stuff on the company computer, I'm not doing too badly - Day 2 in the small Zs House. I have the rotring pens out and am drawing a switch cabinet in the old fashioned way.

Anyway,  I'm going to be preparing really basic electrical lessons for some of our younger engineers and the generally curious.  I already have about 15 students and various managers keep phoning to say can you put Joe on the list please.  It seems to be something they've been needing for a while.

So, I have no doubt that I am going to be asking you to check my basic understanding of things and not least to check my maths for me.  To this day that is still not very good.

But I have a question for you about copyright.  If you were to be emailing colleagues with information (which might not even be correct but I hope it will be), and in effect producing a basic introduction to electrical theory.  Would you do anything to protect it?  In my opinion it will belong to the company because I am being paid by them while I sit at home.  Our department who deals with that are, as you can imagine rather busy and on skeleton staff.  My other concern is that loads of the examples will be utter plagiarism.  So ought I to give citations?

I remember JP producing some really helpful information which he shared with his I&T team.  Eventually I started to see it on the web as the work of others.  Even one post of it on here from a claimed author.  I smiled only yesterday when looking for a copy of table I1 from the on site guide and up came JPs document in the images.

I would appreciate any advice or experiences on that.

in the mean time, seeing as it is on the company public web site you might like to see what on earth Zs has been up to for all this time. I was a touch reluctant to do this article for them because as many of you know, I don't subscribe to Women's networks.  It was the news of protests and arrests elsewhere in the world that made me sit up and think how lucky we are in the UK so I agreed.  this should be a link to a recent  thingumy. I did also wonder whether to chuckle or sob  when I realised I am now officially, the token oldie ?.

Good to be back,

  • Zs:

Well unless I fill my pockets with that stuff they use on the faces of wristwatches which BOD told me about once.

Just don't use it as lipstick! (Dial painter's lip - cancer of the lower lip caused by shaping brushes into a fine point in order to apply radioactive paint to clock and instrument dials.)

Chris 'Just how many ways are there of stating Ohm's law? ?'

You have knocked me into touch beautifully and you are right.

Oh dear, I fear that I have been misunderstood. My point was that there is only one way* so inevitably authors will write the same things.

    (*Or is it three? V = IR, I = V/R, R = V/I ? )
  • There are many non algebreaic ways though, and sketches of two pipes filling a bath being faster than one may help with the resistors in parallel theory, though some cartoon skills are useful

We have an all in one printer scanner that we can also use as a photocopier at a push and that is great for the sort of scanning needed for forms, driving licences, schematics in crayon and so forth.
  • Don't you just love technology?

  • Ha.. I wear that as a rather unique necklace.  Had it made.  Sometimes it is really useful!

  • If not already on your list, for Watts, besides V x I there is also I² x R and V²/R

    (Apologies if already noted)

  • Hello Zs,

is it nice to hear from you again. We met at the M.K. Regs'. exam run by J.P. ages ago. You told me some good news about yourself. I hope that is still good news for you. After a while you will find the proposed teaching work easy. Just borrow others' effective methods of delivery as found online and in books. Also ask lots of questions. It is essential that you gauge the students' existing knowledge so as not to lose those who lack basic knowledge or bore those because the material is too simple. If in doubt start low and work rapidly upwards in difficulty. Pictures speak a thousand words, as do videos. The use of every day analogies are really helpful in imparting knowledge.

    Good luck.

Great to have you back on the Forum Zs. You have a great way with words and always tell a good story.

So far as copyright I think the internet has, by and large, destroyed that. I always acknowledge sources including an excellent little article by you on RCD's that I cut and pasted years ago from this forum.  In your case - full acknowledgement alongside the title - only common decency.

As for teaching - it's the quickest way to learn just how little you know. In a previous life I used to be used as an expert witness on asbestos to amongst others groups of HSE inspectors.  They always asked searching questions that always got me thinking. Just think back to being on the delegate or student seats - it was easy to see when a presenter really knew their stuff and when they were winging it.
  • Well, every day a school day eh?  I have learned that getting it all 'wrote' down and illustrated takes quite a while and involves a clarity normally hidden behind a mumble-swerve.

But, because many of us are at home (and I am taking this v seriously), I have engaged the services of a couple of our new recruits from work who are also indoors and being paid. They are producing the drawings for me.  A Voltaic Pile arrived this morning and it is just fine if not better than a photo. I've got him on Amperes law of force now and look forward to seeing that.  If I can I will get them to calligraph the formulae for me - I don't half get cross with the insert function for fractions on word.

I am going to use the phone camera - super idea that-  and of course the drawings from the chaps can be cutted and pasted. I can do grammar.

It is soo difficult not to race ahead isn't it? Thank you for yours and i'm going to refer to them as I get further in - I squared R, oh yes, that too. I found myself talking about current carrying capacity of cable yesterday and it is way too early in the plan for that to raise its head.  Actually it was only when I read it all through this morning after taking a break that I noticed a sort of lack of direction.  Like my posts then?!

I'd better crack on.  I also want to look at the virus section on here because I'm interested in the IET's appeal for assembling ventilators. I'd do that.  I suggested it to the company and I think someone is on it.

    Soon,  Zs

  • You wrote anymore books lately ??
