Am I qualified to carry out an EICR?

Hi

I'm new to this forum. However I have attained the old C and G 2381 16th edition and c and g 2391 inspection and test. As I understand I am able to do PIRs.

In the past I have done PIRs to my own property to keep my hand in so to speak but as a Landlord I'm trying to find someone to do EIRCs to my own tenanted properties.

It struck me that I should theoretically be able to do them myself.

I have ordered the following books

18TH edition

Onsite guide up to date copy

Guidance note 3 uo to date copy

Buildjng regs for 18th edition

The NAPIT EICR code reader

I have downloaded the forms fir the EICR. They are a bit of a development on the old PIR formaf but with the help of the guidance notes and some example forms I am hoping I'll be able to meet the criteria.

As far as test equip, ent is concerned I have a Fluke 1653 multi tester.

Before I bother my tenants I intend to run through my own property first.

Thank you jn advance

You seem quite confident about this. Perhaps you would be able to recommend an exam centre where I can just sit the exam without having to sit the whole course?

How do you mean Legh? I did my 18th with NIC in Bristol. It consisted of a morning read through with the instructor (is this what you mean by a course?) which I misssed as they helpfully shut the M4 and then the exam in the afternoon. Home in time for tea and muffins!

I have found it impossible to just sit the exam because all the training centers want your money. There is no money for them in administering an exam only. Although, when you think about it, the costs of administering, invigilation, heat light, security, postage all add up.

I would be happy to pay a surcharge of twice the exam costs.

  • But actually any organisation that can organise some invigilators, rent a village hall and some desks, or a school hall in the holidays, can administer an exam, and plenty of professional organisations do exactly this for their members, it does not have to be a dedicated training centre. To keep the training function distinct from the examination/  evaluation is seen as a perfectly fair way to do things in other disciplines.

    Mike.

Back in 2019 you could do exam only. It was not readily advertised, but some gave the facility. If I remember it was about £80/£90 or there a bouts. ClarksonsEvans was one. ?

  • Messrs Clarkson and Evans, aka the two Steve's, I worked with them when they were on the tools working as labour only subbed for Big Bert back in the 1980's

Even back then when we sat in half built houses drinking coffee having a break there was talk of having a training school as part of their business.

  • No matter how well qaulified, I would consider it VERY poor practice to carry out an EICR on ones own property in order to let it out.

This is in my view a clear conflict of interest, though not actually prohibited.
  • If it is done honestly, I cannot see a problem.

Naturally, all of us in here have fully up-to-date installations in excellent condition; and the paperwork (EIC, schedules and diagrams, past EICRs) is kept neatly in a folder beside the origin or DB(s).

I did my 2391 at Clarkson and Evans. Stayed at a local BnB, for 5 days' then back for the exam, for one day. They were brilliant, although right across England for me but, well worth it!!

Let us know what you will do if you get a fail and really expensive estimate for bringing your installation up to 18th Edition with a new CU that is not needed!

Oh and a refusal to let you have any details before you have paid for testing upfront.
