the old PIR 1,2,3,4 resulted in peoples misinterpretations , the number of times I`d hear orginistations said we will do do code 1s quickly but the code 2s we`ll leave until we can afford it (this was never the intent of the coding) so 2s would appear year after year (or 5)

Same with 'basic protection' and 'fault protection'

I think we need to have room for progress/improvements. Indirect contact was misleading in some circumstances as it really only had ADS in mind (i.e. when some metalwork was inadvertently made live) and sort of ignored the more general problem of ensuring safety when basic insulation fails under other circumstances (e.g. under double/reinforced insulation situations).


Likewise it's difficult to offer main equipotential bonding as a method of protection against shock when BS 7671 doesn't have any actual performance requirements for it - and as a result a perfectly conforming installation could have lethal voltages between exposed/extraneous conductive parts during a fault (unlike supplementary bonding where there is a requirement to keep voltages differences below 50V if the duration exceeds 5s).


Certainly not all changes seem to be for the better, but some can me.

Update,

I`ve had a word by the buyer, on whose behalf the EICR was done, and informed him of my recommendations.

The remainder of the report was "interesting" and I`ve got permission to send it to Dave Z without redactions.

I`m sure it will cause quite a bit of mirth but sadly not any great surprises.


I am unable to undertake any of the work myself.


I`ve advised a new EICR , warned there will be corrections before a new CU can be added.


I have in mind somebody who I would love to undertake it but I think travelling costs etc would rule it out.

No surprises in my choice but he`s on this forum and is one of my heroes, A diamond geezer. But I`ll not say who he is or that his initials are JP either ?
