EV Charging and Lamp Posts

We have a job wiring lamp post lighting in a private car park.

Somebody has decided that an EV point will be fitted at each lamp post and will supply the light.

When you apply the 3% volt drop for the luminaire, obviously the cable size increases substantially.

Any thoughts?

  • Really of course the lamp posts have (quite correctly) been put in where light is needed, and that means a lot of them will be  poorly placed as charge points. And that is before consideration of how much extra load the cables can withstand.

    It is a neat retrofit  idea where it works, but there will be plenty of locations where it simply won't. (all those lights up the centre of the M25 for example....)

    We had the fast lane on the M4 into london becoming a bus lane, then an Olympics lane why not a EV charging lane? Stranger things have happened. :)

  • Durham Council say lighting columns are generally planted in the footpath at the rear, maybe it’s time for a rethink.

    4.2 Columns must not obstruct footpaths or vehicular accesses. They shall be sited in accordance with BS5489-1:2013 + A2:2008, Code of Practice for the design of road lighting part 1: Lighting of roads and public amenity areas and generally be planted in the footpath at the rear or in the absence of a footpath, a minimum of 0.8 metres from the kerb edge to the face of the column and within the highway to be adopted. No obstruction or planting shall hinder access to the column base compartment or the light distribution from the lantern
