Smoke alarm question

Hi guys attended a Aico training day yesterday, and just wondered what everyone's interpretation of the regs are.

So say for a standard 3 bed new build house

A d1 LD2 system is required...do you all put smokes in the most habitable room as well as kitchen, hall, landing, utility etc ?

Also with solar would you put a smoke in a loft, this wasnt really covered. A solar team told me only if its covering the battery but the aico guy seemed to say if anything was up there including the inverter

Thank you

  • This is not a new recommendation.

Further, all standards undergo public consultation for typically 8-12 weeks at "draft for public comment" stage, so it is possible for you to raise this directly with the relevant committee at that time.

Or, indeed at any time, a message can be sent to the Committee Manager to raise the issue ... in this case, FHS12/1. Use the "Contact Committee" link on this page: https://standardsdevelopment.bsigroup.com/committees/50002208#published to provide this feedback.

Usually, feedback has more change of success if there is a proposed change to the standard alongside the issue, so in this case, you should:

    (a) State the issue that exists with the standard (products not always suitable for the environment using the examples you provided above) along with the affected Clause(s)

    (b) State your recommendation as to how to remedy this (for example, this could be delete the provision, or make it conditional, so that if dust and detritus, or extreme temperatures, are expected in the location, an alternative approach is recommended).

  • Good point by Turbogen. Whether a detector is in the loft or not, cognisance of Part M, and indeed, general health and safety common sense, would require a remote hush/test/reset facility. In fact, this might be a 5839-6 requirement.

  • There have been recent updates to BS5839 I wonder if remote hush/test/reset facility has been included?  If YES then is it only for part 1 or part 6 or both?
