Does anyone know the cause of the fire?

Was there an issue with the Solar PV panels themselves?

Did they use Micro inverters on a 1:1 basis per Salar PV panel?

Was it a mis-match of MC4 connector brands?

Should an install of that size have a Rapid Shut down mechanism?

What cable was used between the PV panels?

How many strings were used for the 100 panels?

Moving forward do need a review of commercial rooftop solar installation safety with input from the following?
IET -  The Institution of Engineering and Technology
BSI  -  British Standards Institution
LFB -  London Fire Brigade
BRE. -  Building Research Establishment

As always please be polite and respectful in this purely academic debate.

Come on everybody let’s help inspire the future

  • I would be very surprised if the PV modules themselves were the case of the fire. They consist largely of glass and aluminum. Glass is non flammable, and aluminium burns only under extreme conditions,

Potential Induced Degradation (PID) causes hot-spots, which is suspected to lead to fires in some situations.

  • A left field idea.  Should FB (Fire Brigades) in the UK have access to or be forwarded information from DNO/DSO and MCS (micro Certification Scheme) about buildings with Solar PV on roof?  Thus if there is a fire at that property or neighbouring property they can make a better risk assessment on way to the fire rather then loosing precious time when they arrive at structure that is on fire.  Expanding this further the FB may do site visits to structure that were previously not on their radar.
