Article Scotland South East

About us

The IET South East Scotland Network is led by local volunteers who come together to organise lectures and technical visits that provide opportunities to learn and meet new people.

We aim to raise awareness of science, engineering and technology in the local area, and promote membership of the IET.

Our events

All our events are open to the public and most are free of charge.

Visit the events page filtered by Scotland South East Local Network to find out about our upcoming events.

SESAME - South East Scotland Afternoon Meetings and Events

The SESAME section of IET South East Scotland Network organises a series of daytime activities with both a social and technical theme.

Read blog posts by Jim Gaw (Treasurer of the SESAME committee)

As our name suggests we arrange events within the South East of Scotland with a focus on being both a social and technical group.

All our events and other activities are multi-disciplinary, addressing a wide range of current engineering and technology topics of interest to both specialist and generalist alike.

Our talks, by an invited speaker, are held at Edinburgh Napier University Craiglockhart Campus with the presentation followed by afternoon tea and discussion with the speaker. They are open to the public and are free. Registration is not necessary but is helpful for us to manage the event. Our technical visits are generally within an hour’s drive of Edinburgh and normally involve meeting locally for lunch followed by the visit. Visit attendee numbers can be limited thus registration is essential. Visit attendees pay for their own lunch

 Our Autumn 2023 events were:

  • 4 October - Talk – HYPED Hyper Loop research project:
  • 8 November - Visit – HYPED Demonstration - Edin. University (a follow up to the October talk)
  • 6 December - Talk - Tracking the Future – Satellite Communications

A report of our October and November events can be found here

Our events planned for the first half of 2024 are:

  • 7 February - Talk –  An Edwardian Icon - Magnificent Engineering and the Role of a Lady in its Creation  (Please note this replaces the Submarine Safety Systems talk, which has had to be postponed)
  • 6 March - Visit – Museum of Communication, Burntisland (https://events.theiet.org/events/visit-to-the-museum-of-communication-burntisland/)
  • 10 April - Talk – Engineering Maintenance Management

PLEASE NOTE: The 15 May event will be held at Anturas Consulting, 19 Rutland Square, Edinburgh EH1 2BB (not our usual venue of Napier University Craiglockhart Campus)
