ABB and Nascar have revealed a new electric vehicle (EV) prototype at the recent Chicago Street Race, as well as announcing a partnership that will help Nascar decarbonise its operations as it “pursues achieving net zero operating emissions over the next decade”.
Nascar – which stands for National Association of Stock Car Racing – was founded in 1948 as a professional motorsport organisation in which purpose-built stock cars race against one another. The very first car modified for a Nascar race was a 1939 Ford Coupe.
Fast forward 76 years and Nascar has grown to be one of the largest spectator sports in North America. The day before this year’s Chicago Street Race, which is part of Nascar’s Cup Series and took place on 7 July 2024, the organisation debuted its first electric racecar.
