Rolls-Royce has signed a £9bn deal with the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to build nuclear reactors for the UK’s submarine fleet.
The firm said the contract, which has been dubbed Unity, was the largest it had ever signed with the MoD. The Unity contract stretches over eight years and brings together all elements of research and technology, design, manufacture and in-service support of the nuclear reactors that power the Royal Navy’s submarines.
The MoD said it would create more than 1,000 jobs while safeguarding a further 4,000 roles and “signposts the UK’s commitment to the continuous at sea nuclear deterrent”.
Defence secretary John Healey MP announced the deal today on a visit to Rolls-Royce’s nuclear reactor production facility in Derby.
