The government has finally confirmed a £14.2bn investment in the upcoming Sizewell C nuclear plant, as well as a further £2.5bn for small modular nuclear reactors (SMR).

The expansion of Britain’s nuclear energy capabilities are considered to be a key part of the long-term decarbonisation of the UK’s energy grid. But despite the UK’s strong nuclear legacy – opening the world’s first commercial nuclear power station in the 1950s – no new facilities have opened in the UK since 1995, with all of the existing fleet except Sizewell B likely to be phased out by the early 2030s.

Initial construction works on Sizewell began last year, although the government had still not confirmed the full extent of its funding package until today.

Energy secretary Ed Miliband said the decision will kickstart a “golden age” of nuclear energy in the UK as part of his administration’s efforts to decarbonise the electricity grid. “This is the government’s clean energy mission in action – investing in lower bills...

  • Excellent news, but there must be no hold ups as we explain that nuclear power is safe to generate and vitally needed.

Remind H&S people that nuclear subs have people living within 10 metres of the radiation source with no problem.

Agree that spent Uranium must be carefully guarded whilst being stored and later processed.

Ask environmental protesters to explain how peasants that refused to move from Chernobyl are still alive now.

No delays are acceptable as CO2 emissions cause global warming which is linked to the world population explosion.

We will soon be running low on easy to extract hydrocarbon fuels,; so how will our 2 children keep warm?

  • Hello Clive:

I question your statement that people working within Nuclear subs living within 10 metres of the radiation source have "no" problems.

There was an old news article that indicated that children born of sailors working on nuclear subs were more lightly to be females.

Also there was an on-going rumor that some sailors became infertile .

I therefore regard your "NO problem" statement as actually being "unproven".

Of course, its not necessarily a given that the nuclear aspect is the issue. There are plenty of other chemicals and heavy metals in the confined atmosphere of a submarine, especially one probably built before we started restricting certain compounds (such as hexavalent chrome).

  • Hello Mark:

I do like the old legal Scottish concept of "Not proven".

I don't believe that the US government would actually publish radiation related tests for and against this theory.

The other big issue in this area could be Stress .

I have gone inside an old WW2 sub and I wondered how anybody could stand up to being sealed inside for days.
