London Ambulance Service (LAS) is deploying underwater drones, helping paramedics rescue people who get into difficulty in the capital’s waterways.

Whereas previously, paramedics would use long-handled poles to reach people and bring them closer to the surface, the unmanned drones are equipped with mechanical grabbers to perform the same task.

The technology means that LAS’ Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) can reach those in danger, while reducing the need for the paramedics to enter hazardous water.

“Even for experienced first responders, entering the water to rescue someone can be very challenging. These new drones will help us quickly locate and reach people submerged in the water, while reducing the need for paramedics to undertake potentially dangerous rescue attempts themselves,” said HART paramedic Christel Oweis.
