Less than one minute read time.

For those who haven't noticed, the IMechE and IET are now officially 'co-located'. As Chairman of the London Network, this is of course no surprise to me due to the impact it has on the Savoy Place based events.

But  even as an ordinary member, I have seen enough notifications, consultations etc. come by to have had my say and to have been made aware. I have even been to one of the open evenings at One Birdcage Walk where tours of the building (and samples of the good catering I must add!) were organised. Nevertheless it always seemed to this event.

But it really dawned on me that we are now officially sharing the building, when I bumped in to Nigel Fine, our CEO, leaving the building - calling it his new office :)

For those who haven't had the opportunity, go and check out our temporary home and members facilities. I was especially impressed with the thoroughness of the co-branding and the free meetings room for members during office hours.

  • Hopefully, the IMechE building will prove to be a satisfactory temporary home for IET members for the next two years or so.
I have visited it a couple of times, the Member's Room is OK and the food service adequate, but neither as comfortable or as comprehensive as the Kelvin Lounge was.
Minor disadvantage is that there are no lockers in the cloakroom to place items securely, and of course the library facilities, although good, are no match for 'electrical/electronic' needs compared to the Savoy Place library.
Perhaps interesting that the IMechE library is of a traditional style like the Savoy Place library was, but not at all like the 'knowledge centre' which is supposed to replace the Savoy Place library in two years time. My view is that many users like the older style library and do not consider a room of computer terminals, despite their usefulness, to be a sufficient replacement.
It will be interesting to meet IMechE members over the next couple of years and see what they make of their new house-mates.
