Retraining to become an electrician

I'm currently working as an engineer with an electrical/electronic bias in the Defence Industry. My role consists of definition of requirements for design upgrades, management of obsolescence, in service support for marine electrical and electronic control systems.

I previously worked in an electronics development and validation role within the rail industry.

I have a BEng in electrical and electronic engineering. I'm probably at the level where I could apply to become chartered, but haven't got around to finalising my application.

I feeling really fed up with having a desk based job, I've been toying with the idea of being an electrician, but from the research I've done i would need to start from scratch with the training.

Wondered if there is anyone here that has made a similar move, that could offer some advice.

  • Yes, I started out in the electronics industry and changed over to electrical installation work as it offered more hands on.

Unfortunately, I got board with the routine side of things, although I did do some electrical/electronic design jobs which made it more palatable. I eventually went into teaching while continuing with electrical work including I&T. One of my ex students became a valued colleague.
