Retraining to become an electrician

I'm currently working as an engineer with an electrical/electronic bias in the Defence Industry. My role consists of definition of requirements for design upgrades, management of obsolescence, in service support for marine electrical and electronic control systems.

I previously worked in an electronics development and validation role within the rail industry.

I have a BEng in electrical and electronic engineering. I'm probably at the level where I could apply to become chartered, but haven't got around to finalising my application.

I feeling really fed up with having a desk based job, I've been toying with the idea of being an electrician, but from the research I've done i would need to start from scratch with the training.

Wondered if there is anyone here that has made a similar move, that could offer some advice.

  • An education institution providing relevant courses may be able to provide advice on the extent to which your existing qualifications would be considered for accreditation of prior learning.

Another idea to consider would be to seek guidance via the IET Mentoring service.  The staff will be able to match you to a volunteer mentor who would be able to provide some independent insights.  A role in a different sector might provide change and variation that would be more fulfilling for you.

    Good luck
