Hi,
Which country do you want to obtain certification in? Here in the UK we don't use PE certification, it's more of a US thing (and some other countries).
Thanks,
Andy
Hi Andy,
Thanks for your reply.
actually I am currently working in GCC and some companies requires PE certification as an engineer. The issue is the Srilankan Engineering Council does not recognize Geological Engineering degree as an engineering course as it’s not available in Srilanka.
Hi Hemantha,
I realise nobody has responded to your second post, possibly because like me they don't really know what the answer is. As Andy said, PE Certification is more an American thing along with certain other countries (e.g. South Africa I believe), However if it is Sri Lanka who are asking for PE Certification it is probably best to ask the Sri Lankan Engineering Council about the procedure, though of course if they do not recognise the degree it may be best to also ask them from which countries they recognise PE Certification and then decide which country to try to attain it from. If they recognise the UK CEng registration as equivalent then we can probably help you then.

Alasdair
Hi Alasdair,
Firstly, thank you for taking time to reply to my comment and giving me advises. It means a lot for me.
Currently, there are only few engineering courses are recognized in IESL (Official Engineering body in Srilanka) under IEng title. As my degree course (BSc. Geological Engineering) which was obtained from Cuba-under government scholarships program, is not listed under engineering categories in IESL and the initial suggestion was to follow an engineering course (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Earth Resources, etc.) already listed under IESL to receive IEng title. That is the official procedure.
Anyway, I am currently working in GCC and some companies request PE certification in their job descriptions. As IET is one of the world recognized Engineering institutes, I believe UK IEng/CEng registration will be valid in GCC as well.
it would be grateful to receive further advices from you on how to obtain IEng/CEng certification in Geological Engineering please.
Moreover, could you please explain What is PE Certification and what is the difference between IEng/CEng certification and PE certification?
Thank you.
Regards !

Hi Hemantha,
I suspect you have the issue that you have is that you have an international degree from a body that isn't recognised by anyone. The advice you were given to follow a local engineering course may sound wrong, but its probably the simplest and potentially the quickest method.
For IEng/CEng in the UK, you would need to get your education assessed that it was equivalent to an accredited degree in the UK. The process for that depends on which professional institution you approach. Geological engineering would often fall within the remit of the Civil engineering, so you do have choices although they all UK institutions ultimately conform the the Engineering Council rules.
Assuming you stick with the IET, I would strongly suggest you approach a Professional Registration advisor for assistance.
Regarding PE versus UK professional registration, my understanding is that the US/Canada forms of PE have similar requirements about education and experience, but PE requires a a specific time period of experience and requires some amount of local experience. I don't believe you can achieve US/Canada PE unless you are resident in the country (happy for someone to correct me).
UK professional registration can and is achieved by non-residents and rather than using a set time period, it focusses on the achievement of competencies. Although in most cases, you would fully expect someone to take a number of years to develop all those competences.
I have no knowledge of how IESL approaches these things. However, I can see that it is a signatory on the Washington accord, so their approach will likely be not too dissimilar.
Regards,
Mark
We're about to take you to the IET registration website. Don't worry though, you'll be sent straight back to the community after completing the registration.
