As an IPRA who has Incorporated Engineer status, shall review the Chartered Engineer application?

I achieved the Incorporated Engineer status recently in July'24, and volunteered for IPRA in Nov'24, could I do the Professional Registration application review for the Chartered Engineer applicants?

  • Hi,

First thing, well done for volunteering! You should now have access to the registration and standards forum (link below), you'll find you'll get the best answers to questions like these by asking there:

      IET Registration and Standards

As I understand it the answer is yes, if you feel comfortable to do it. As PRA / IPRAs we're advising on content, writing style etc, we're not making any judgement on whether the applicant has met the criteria - that's for the assessment and interview panels to decide. The important thing is that you feel clear yourself on what the differences in competences are between IEng and CEng and can explain these to the applicant to make sure they clearly bring out their evidence for the competences.

You can always ask for a second opinion from an experienced IPRA / PRA if you feel you need it, particularly maybe in your first few applications. For many applicants getting the application clear to show where they are on the IEng / CEng divide can be challenging - even those of us who have been PRAs for many years struggle sometimes.

Good luck and welcome on board!
