Can Civil Engineers apply membership IEng/Ceng at IET

I have a civil engineering background and I work in the wastewater sector for more than 10 years and I want to apply membership at IET as IEng. Does IET accepts membership for Civil Engineers?

  • assessment is based on evidence of competencies and if you can demonstrate these.  We see applications from applicants with all sorts of backgrounds including civil engineers.

  • You can apply for Registration through any Professional Engineering Institute of which you are a member. That said, you should consider which one(s) is/are the most suitable to be a member of based on qualifications and current engineering role. For instance, if you are involved in building bridges then the BCS or Institute of Lighting Professionals is unlikely to be appropriate.

In your case the most appropriate PEIs are likely to be ICE (Civils), IET, CIWEM (Water and Environmental Management) and perhaps IMechE, depending on your exact current role, but I wouldn't see applying via the IET as causing any problems.

  • Although the IET is traditionally associated with electrical and electronic engineering, it welcomes professionals from all engineering disciplines. You’ll need to become an IET member first and demonstrate how your experience meets the UK-SPEC requirements for IEng registration.

  • Thank you for the clarification

  • Thank you. What I understand is IET is a multi-disciplinary professional body?

  • Thank you

  • Hi,

Yes that is correct. However do be aware that the member services (magazine etc) have a main focus on electrical engineering.

    Thanks,

    Andy
