CPEng to CEng

Currently, I am holding the License of CPEng (Australia) in Electrical Engineering alongwith IntPE(Aus). Now, I am looking forward for the CEng (UK). Please guide me with further steps.

  • You would perhaps need to speak to a member of staff at the IET. Perhaps e-mail profreg@theiet.org

Engineers Australia say they have a mutual recognition agreement in place: https://www.engineersaustralia.org.au/membership/mutual-recognition-agreements#accordion-6841

However, I can't find the information myself to confirm the IET makes the same statement.

  • For your information,

Refer to:International Register of Professional Engineers (INTPE)

    IntPEs coming to the UK

If you have gained your IntPE qualification from another IPEA jurisdiction, you can apply for professional registration as a Chartered Engineer. To do this you will need to become a member of one of the UK’s Licensed Professional Engineering Institutions (PEIs).

As part of your application, you will be required to submit the following documents:

    • Detailed curriculum vitae of experience since graduation, indicating the levels of responsibility held
    • Current record of Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
    • Evidence of IntPE registration (confirmation may be sought)
    • References from two persons who have personal knowledge of your competence as a professional engineer

In recognition of the professional standing of IntPE, the Engineering Council allows a streamlined application process consisting of:

    • Minimal scrutiny of academic qualification and professional development
    • A professional review interview that will concentrate on competence to operate within a UK professional environment, rather than assessment of general competence

Some Licensed PEIs may have additional membership requirements to this streamlining.

    Hope this can help.

  • Since you already hold CPEng (Australia) and IntPE(Aus), you are in a strong position. The UK Engineering Council (ECUK), through the International Engineering Alliance (IEA) accords like the Washington Accord and the International Professional Engineers Agreement (IPEA), provides mutual recognition pathways.

    Next steps for CEng (UK):

    1. Select a UK Professional Engineering Institution (PEI) licensed by the Engineering Council (e.g., IET, IMechE, IChemE, ICE – depending on discipline).

    2. Apply for Membership in the chosen PEI → they will assess your qualifications and experience.

    3. Mutual Recognition / International Route:

      • Many PEIs offer a streamlined process for existing CPEng/IntPE holders (reduced evidence requirements).

      • You may still need to complete a Professional Review Interview (PRI) in the UK format, but the workload is lighter since you’re already assessed at equivalent standard.

    4. Submit Application to Engineering Council via the PEI → once successful, you’ll be placed on the UK Register as Chartered Engineer (CEng)ineers Agreement (IPEA), provides mutual recognition pathways.
