Seeking a PRA For CEng Registration (Railway Signalling)

Hello all

I am seeking a Professional Registration Advisor (PRA) who can provide guidance with my Chartered Engineer (CEng) application.

I understand that the IET does not usually align PRAs by sector, but I felt it would be sensible to reach out here first, as relevant insight could help strengthen and contextualise my application.

I am applying via the Individual Route and it was recommended by my previous manager that my experience is well suited to this level of professional registration.

Many thanks in advance for any support or guidance you may offer.

Kind regards

Ross

  • Hi Ross,

A few hints, having helped a few signalling engineers through the process. The challenge is for you to show that you actually take technical responsibility for engineering issues, that you are not just "doing it by the book". So the thing you will want to work through with your PRA is finding those oddball projects where you've had to make your own engineering judgements. The advantage you have is that where you do need to make judgements there's a good chance they will be safety critical which gives them more chance of being at CEng level. Being involved with the introduction of new equipment is always a good one, but it can also be trying to apply signalling principles to a very "legacy" situation. Anything where you've had to ask for a derogation from the standards is a potentially good example.

It can actually be an advantage to have a PRA who is outside the signalling world, they will pick up where you have assumed understanding of signalling design processes (let alone all the blessed acronyms!). The application needs to make sense to an engineer from a totally different industry, who, for example, is not going to have a clue what a "principles designer" is. The application needs to spell out the responsibilities of that role - not the tasks that are undertaken, but rather what you are responsible and accountable for in terms of its impact on the railway. Often an outside eye can really help with this.

Good question, apologies that I can't offer myself to help as a PRA as I'm swamped at the moment, but I will drop you a note on LinkedIn - I'm very happy to have a chat if it helps, there's a good chance I know about some of the projects you've worked on recently and so I may be able to advise which ones may make good examples.

    Thanks,

    Andy
