CPD hours & deadline

According to the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) guidelines, how many CPD hours per year must professionally active members (CEng, IEng & EngTech) complete, and by what deadline should they submit their CPD record for the previous year?

30 hours per year if you're in regular work.  It's done by calendar year, so submit the CPD at the beginning of the next year.  They don't seem to have published a specific deadline.

  • Also you don't need to submit it, it's about having a record should you be asked for it. It doesn't need to be in CareerManager, it can be in any format you like. The IET rule is (my highlight):

    5. Members shall keep their knowledge and skills up-to-date through planned professional development and seek to broaden and deepen that knowledge throughout their working life. Members shall keep adequate records of professional development undertaken.

The EC rule is more complete for registrants as to what should be in this:

CEng, IEng, EngTech and ICTTech registrants should take all necessary steps to maintain and enhance their competence through CPD:

    • Take ownership of their learning and development needs, and develop a plan to indicate how they might meet these, in discussion with their employer, as appropriate
    • Undertake a variety of development activities, both in accordance with this plan and in response to other opportunities which may arise
    • Record their CPD activities
    • Reflect upon what they have learned or achieved through their CPD activities and record these reflections
    • Evaluate their CPD activities against any objectives which they have set and record this evaluation
    • Review their learning and development plan regularly following reflection and assessment of future needs
    • Support the learning and development of others through activities such as mentoring and sharing professional expertise and knowledge

And (I know you didn't ask this, but people often do) remember that it's not about "collecting CPD certificates", although people can do that if they want, pretty much every engineer will achieve the 30 hour CPD requirements through their normal daily work, just from new projects they've worked on, new pieces of equipment they are working with, understanding changes to legislation or standards or company procedures.

So please spread the message "don't panic about CPD"!!!! Just keep a note somewhere every time you learn something new or refresh knowledge, it'll very quickly mount up. And have some record of a CPD plan, however many engineers will already have this, including the required review, from their employer's annual performance development process (annual appraisals etc).

Remember to turn this around - the point is to nudge the engineer who believes they can go to university / college / apprenticeship and that what they learnt there is still completely applicable 30 years later. And yes there are a few around. It just needs a record to show, if asked, that that's not who you are.

    Thanks,

    Andy
