Query on Current Lead Time for CEng Application Assessments

I have two mentees who are in the process of applying for CEng registration. They submitted their applications a couple of months ago, but the assessments have not yet been carried out. Could you please advise on the current lead time for CEng application assessments? Many Thanks.

  • Hi all,

By way of an update to this thread, I submitted my CEng application recently, and was a bit worried when I read that there was a backlog - after a month of waiting for just the "initial staff assessment" of my application, I sent a polite request to see what the indicative timeline would be, to which I have now received a rather worrying update:

    "

We are currently experiencing delays in processing professional registration applications. We unfortunately cannot give a timeline at present; however, we assure you that we will be in contact as soon as possible with an update on the next stage of the process. Your application is currently going through initial staff checks.

We recognise how important professional recognition is for your career development and sincerely apologise for the inconvenience.  This delay is due to a combination of internal team changes and challenges with upgrading our IT systems. These issues have created a pipeline of applications which we are actively working through in order as quickly as we can.

We are doing everything we can to speed up the process and minimise the number of applicants waiting an extended period for their interview. However, we want to set realistic expectations that it may still take some time to resolve.

    "

It does look like this could be quite a waiting period, I'm therefore wondering if it might be worth exploring getting chartered via a different organisation related to my field of engineering.

Does anyone else have a recent update on their application to give a bit more of an appreciation/indication of what the current timelines are for applications?!

    Thanks!

  • Hi Adrian,

Here's the timeline for my own application:

    • 12 November 2025 - Application submitted, fee paid.
    • 13 March 2026 - Passed 'Registration & Standards Department' check stage
    • 7 May 2026 - Passed 'Pre-Interview Assessment Panel' check stage

I'm still waiting to hear about scheduling my PRI, but I believe this will be dependent on finding interviewers with matching backgrounds.

Anecdotally, I believe things are improving in regard to the backlog.

  • That's great, thank you Matt - certainly provides more of an idea on the wait time (though I imagine highly frustrating)

  • In reality, it hasn't been an issue. I would've thought the IET is trying to get to a stage where application and wait times are more uniform so applicants know what to expect. I discovered threads about the backlog just after I submitted my application, so was initially slightly concerned, but aiming to apply for CEng wasn't an overnight decision, so it tracks that achieving it also might take some time.

Everyone has different circumstances, and if registration is a necessity for someone, I can understand needing a more definite (or at least, transparent) process.
