Getting a job in the Electrical Engineering Industry

I gained an HND in Electrical Engineering at Teesside University in 2018 with Distinction. Sadly, I have been unable to gain a position with this qualification due to experience issues and I am now working in a job outside the engineering industry.

I have recently been looking into the training for Electricians, but there are a number of pitfalls to this training. You actually need a package of separate qualifications and experience to achieve skilled electrician status. Typically

NVQ 2 Electrical Installation

NVQ 3 Electrical Installation with work log

C&G 2391-52 Inspection & Test

IET Technology 18th wiring edition with Ammendment 4

Am2 practical assessment

My main problem is the cost in that taking all these different qualifications in a pathway would cost around £9,000. Another problem is getting an employer to set  a student on as a worker for the logging off in work assessment for the NVQ 3 Installation. There is also the extra time that it would take to achieve this goal in a long pathway.

I can see why employers are not setting many apprentices on, especially smaller employers. They have to give time off for training and pay a wage which has increased over the years. There is the cost of the training courses which is high although the worker may pay the cost of the course in a deal with the employer to get trained. I am concerned about too many private trainers getting involved with training and pushing costs up for students. I also am concerned about the standards in these companies.

I feel that this training route is costly and difficult for people to access. There is a mixture of local colleges and private trainers with differences in cost and approach. Students will have difficulty in the current economic circumstances to get an employer who is capable of delivering the logging skills and experience that a student requires to gain the skills on the course. I am highly concerned that there are C & G and IET qualifications covering different topics and stages in this pathway. I feel that all the topics and practical assesment should be delivered in one single qualification making costs, time studying and administration simpler. I feel that the logging experience should be delivered at the end of the course when the student has passed the qualification and is in a better position to apply to an employer.  Help should be given to gain employment for practical logging of skills. I feel there should be better structured pathways for students to gain employment. A better and more flexible support structure to help employers to support students needs Should be developed. Distance learning and part time options are limited anf have not been developed. They should be more flexibility and delivery options.

Another area of concern is that not all Electrical Engineering degrees are equal and the market is confusing to students and employers. I finished a HND in Electrical Engineering at the University of Teesside in 2018. They did offer a BEng Tech in Electronics Engineering, but this had limited choice of modules and was not acredited in any way like most Beng and Meng courses. This makes the degree not equal to the degree for full time students. The excuse for this is that BTEC students come from a less academic background than their full time students. There is a big diffence in the amounts of academic work from C & G to BTEC and I have half a garage full of work to prove it. The BTEC HND at the University of Teesside presented a vast amount of very indepth information that students had to process and because it was assignment based the students are constantly working on assignments, circuit builds and software. I would like the IET to have a rethink for the longer term and just have one Degree with the core modules for students to learn and then after this optional modules. I am concerned that students are further graded into Beng and Meng which cause further confusion in the market place.

There are problems in some industries with not being registered typically in bigger organisations such as the NHS, BAE Sysyems, Siemens and Rolls Royce. Also small to medium sized busineses are wanting students to be standing on their own two feet straight out of the box. Sadly, this is not the case and students are faced with lack of understanding about what the employer wants and matching issues particularly at interview where big HR dictate the question.

  • If I was you. I would apply for ECS Card Electrical Engineer (AQP) using HND and work towards formal training in PLCs (2 week course - £2000) and wiring regulations (£300) then  work towards a NVQ Level 3 in Maintenance Engineering. I wouldn't bother with Professional Registration in Maintenance Engineering as employers are not interested. Majority of maintenance recruiters don't even know what professional registration is...

  • Anytime, remember experience is the key from entry. Many of my peers did this move to industry and it works. 

    EAL Level 3 in Programmable Logic Controllers is around £1000 (5 days). City & Guilds Accredited PLC Certification is around £1000 (5 days), obviously combined £2000 for two weeks training. £300ish for wiring regs. Also, I would do short CPD accrediated courses in electrical safety and LOTO, £20 each to show evidence of formal training. 

    With a HND in electrical and electronics, I would work towards either BEng (Hons) Engineering Management top-up degree distance learning (£6000) or CMI/ILM level 5 diploma in Management (£2000) to transition to management engineer from technical engineer. 

    ECS cards are becoming popular to prove electrical competency in industry at different levels for the employers electrical competency matrix and health & Safety. ECS gold card is vocational and white card is academic but both are classed as craft cards dependent on the discipline. Recruiters know about ECS cards for maintenance but not much about professional registration.....Professional registration has not provided me with any value in my career. 

  • I've seen a few jobs specifying various cards. One of my previous employers often specified CSCS, which is a similar scheme.

    I would place greater personal value in the craft cards themselves then the "Professionally Qualified Person" cards. This is on the basis that I could have gone out and got myself a PQP CSCS without too much trouble, despite not being a construction engineer (or particularly interested in construction). Fortunately for the role I was doing, it was optional rather than mandatory.

    I've seen a few roles advertised on large projects that have specified that professional registration is a nice to have. But at that point its just something which is always you to differentiate yourself from the competition.

    I am not a fan of 'PQP' cards. At least AQP cards provides the discipline based on qualifications. I have heard of someone with a pure maths non-engineering degree became a member of the IET using their 'STEM degree' with no hands-on electrical experience and gained a PQP card to try to become a hands-on engineer in maintenance......I don't even think professional registration is required for the PQP card, just membership - dangerous and IET allows it to happen...........the IET should be setting and defending high standards for electrical and engineering competence, rather than appearing to turn a blind eye to a potential loophole.. Min requirement for PQP card should be professional registration and clearly identifying the individual's registration status on the card EngTech, IEng, or CEng. 

    AI Fact Check - The current ECS rules appear to allow a PQP card to be obtained on the basis of membership of a recognised professional institution, without requiring Engineering Council professional registration or an electrotechnical craft qualification. Given that IET membership itself is not equivalent to professional registration, this raises a legitimate question about whether the PQP designation can give a misleading impression of electrotechnical competence.

    ECS AQP route explicitly asks for an electrical engineering/electrotechnical qualification, whereas PQP does not have that equivalent discipline-specific qualification requirement.

  • Don't assume that everyone with an IEng has any actual engineering qualifications. The IET will let in anyone with a relevant STEM degree and sufficient experience. Presumably I could get a CSCS blue card on the basis of IEng MIET. I'm sure I can guess my way through their online H&S test, having done enough online courses at work.

  • Blue has the following requirements...

    "The Blue Skilled Worker card is valid for five years and for those who have achieved a construction related NVQ/SVQ level 2 or SVQ at SCQF level 5 or completed an apprenticeship, such as an Employer sponsored apprenticeship, a City and Guilds Craft Certificate (CGLI) or a CSCS-recognised Apprenticeship."

    ECS looks to be very similar.

    So, it depends what underlies your IEng MIET. But you could definitely get the PQP Card.

    Its interesting that different institutions have different requirements and it isn't consistent. Some do indeed require professional registration, others are membership only. My other institute isn't listed at all. But no surprise, the construction industry really doesn't get Systems Engineering at all.
