How to Demonstrate Master's-Level Underpinning Knowledge When Progressing from IEng to CEng

I am preparing my CEng application and, as an IEng with a BEng, I understand that I need to demonstrate Master's-level underpinning knowledge through my work-based learning and professional practice.

Could any PRAs, Assessors, or recently successful CEng applicants share your views on what Assessors are really looking for? How can this underpinning knowledge be evidenced effectively in the report, beyond simply describing project experience?

    Not quite, what UKSPEC actually says is:

    Applicants who do not have the recognised qualifications will instead have an individual assessment of their qualifications and any other relevant learning such as:
    • formal academic programmes
    • in-employment training
    • experiential learning
    • self-directed learning

    Note that the word "Master's" does not appear there at all.

    For 99% of applicants that is all they need. The only ones who don't in my experience (I've been a PRA for quite a few years now) are those who don't have a Bachelors degree. Bachelors degree + experience is fine.

    What applicants do need to demonstrate is that they are "are developing technological solutions to unusual or challenging problems, using their knowledge and understanding and/or dealing with complex technical issues or situations with significant levels of risk".  (UKSPEC page 41)

    It's more about your role than how you got there.

    You do also need to show a credible career path (which is your underpinning knowledge and understanding) so that the assessors can see a reason why you are in that role. But, in the end, if your employers put you in the position of being (for example) the signatory for significant engineering changes to a nuclear power plant it isn't for the IET to question whether you know enough maths to do that role!

    The harder part for most applicants is showing that their role is CEng rather than IEng. To show that they are solving, or taking responsibility for, complex challenges. A PRA can help you make the best case you can for this.

    Hope that helps, do get hold of UK SPEC if you haven't already got it and look particularly at pages 40 onwards where it compares EngTech / IEng and CEng requirements.
