Looking for UK Engineering Experience Alongside My MSc

Hi everyone,

I recently moved to London to study an MSc in Power Electronics and Control, and I’m currently looking for a part-time engineering opportunity of around 20 hours per week alongside my studies.

My background is in Electrical & Electronics Engineering, with practical experience in areas including solar PV system design, electrical design, power systems, LV/MV equipment, AutoCAD, electrical schematics, BOQs and technical documentation. I’m particularly interested in opportunities around power electronics, renewable energy, electrical design, power systems, energy, controls or related engineering work.

One of my biggest concerns as an international student is spending the entire year doing work unrelated to engineering and then having to explain the gap in UK engineering experience when I graduate.

I’m therefore trying to be proactive rather than wait until graduation to start building UK industry experience.

I’d genuinely appreciate any advice from IET members:

If you were in my position, which companies, engineering consultancies, contractors, start-ups or engineering teams in the UK would you approach for a 20-hour-per-week arrangement?

And if anyone here works in these areas and knows of a team that could use an extra pair of hands, I’d be very grateful for an introduction or even a conversation about where I could contribute.

I’m not necessarily looking for a conventional graduate role. I’m happy to start with design support, CAD, calculations, technical documentation, modelling, testing, research or project assistance and prove myself from there.

Thanks in advance to anyone willing to share advice, a contact, or even point me in the right direction.
