What are the responsibilities of a CEng supporter?

I've tried looking around online for this information but have come up short. I'm preparing my application for CEng through the IET and need to put down some names as supporters of my submission, but before I contact the people I have in mind I would like to give them a heads-up on what to expect as a supporter. I know that I need a supporter to sign/confirm my attached documents (degrees, certificates, etc), but other than that I'm not sure what the supporters need to do.

Could someone who has gone through the CEng process, or even if someone has been a supporter for someone else's CEng application, shed some light on what a supporter needs to do, please? Is there a detailed document they need to complete with detailed questions about me, the suportee? Are they added to the application purely as a reference which may or may not be called upon to confirm details from my submission?

Thanks for any help!

    Hi Richard

On the IET website there are all the forms to download associated with making your CEng application through the IET. They include a form which your supporters need to fill in and post back to the IET. It's a very straight forward process but your supporter for obvious reasons need to be a Chartered Engineers with the IET or another institution. Your supporter needs to know you well enough professionally to support your application.

I have been through the process and also supported an applicant.

if you need further guidance let me know, I'm happy to assist.

    Hope this helps.

I'm applying via the IET Career Manager portal so I never thought to download the paper-package. I've just downloaded the zip file to see what the supporter has to fill out, which is a big help! Am I right in thinking the online version would be exactly the same (but obviously digital)? Thanks, Kathryn, for the clarification too.

Your supporter should also read through your application and give comments, if any and you should make amendments before submission.

Thank you. I've got an IET professional registration advisor who will be going through my application as well.

The one thing that I wold add here is that you should choose a supporter who knows you well and wishes to support your application!

From what I recall of the form (it was a few years back) it's completely confidential and the support has the opportunity at that point to state if you are ready for CEng or not.  Obviously you wouldn't malicously undermine someones application, that's unprofessional.  But if you did feel that someone wasn't ready but they pressed ahead anyway - then you would say so.

Of course if I felt that way I would (and have) say so directly to the candidate before they put the application in.

The supporters I have in mind are my previous and current research advisors who know me/my work very well, as well as my PhD examiner. Two have professional registration (one CEng, one PE), however none of which are affiliated with the IET. I hope this wouldn't be seen as an issue.

Edit: Apparently quoting doesn't want to be friendly with me. Sorry for the formatting.
