What are the responsibilities of a CEng supporter?

I've tried looking around online for this information but have come up short. I'm preparing my application for CEng through the IET and need to put down some names as supporters of my submission, but before I contact the people I have in mind I would like to give them a heads-up on what to expect as a supporter. I know that I need a supporter to sign/confirm my attached documents (degrees, certificates, etc), but other than that I'm not sure what the supporters need to do.

Could someone who has gone through the CEng process, or even if someone has been a supporter for someone else's CEng application, shed some light on what a supporter needs to do, please? Is there a detailed document they need to complete with detailed questions about me, the suportee? Are they added to the application purely as a reference which may or may not be called upon to confirm details from my submission?

Thanks for any help!

  • I am currently looking at applying for CEng myself so have not gone through the whole process... but here are my two cents...

With regard to requiring that supporters are CEng or equivalent, I have been told that this is not a strict requirement. It is preferable but not mandatory. Many of the organisations I have worked at did not have any CEng registered engineers (even though they were very experienced and very brilliant engineers). I have been informed that in that case then as long as your supporters know your work well and are of a senior position to you (e.g. your line manager) then that would be OK.

I would also point out that you may find it useful to request a professional registration advisor (PRA) from the IET. I have just sent a draft of my application information to my PRA for review and feedback. I want to make sure that I am ready and that my application is strong before I submit since I would not want to waste the application fee.

    Best of luck to you.
