Is IET suitable for Mechanical Engineers?

I have a friend who has a BEng(Hons) and MSc in Mechanical Engineering.

I told him IET may suit him.

He told me IET is for Electrical Engineers.

I told him IET is Institution of Engineering and Technology, IET is multi-disciplines.

He still not believe it.

What should I tell him?

  • The answers so far have assumed that you aspire to Chartered Engineer.

You need to examine UK-SPEC and compare what you do with the competence and qualification benchmarks described. There are three potential categories to consider Technician, Chartered and Incorporated. The term “Boiler Engineer” is very elastic and you could fall into any one of these categories, or if you cannot demonstrate knowledge at “level 3” (NVQ, C&G, ONC, or international equivalents) below the threshold for registration. Even in that situation you are of course warmly welcome to contribute to the IET and make use of its benefits.
