ARE CENG AND IENG EQUAL IN STATUS

Can we say that the CEng and IEng be considered equal titles in professional status or IEng is inferior than CEng.

As the Application Form for both CEng and IEng is same.

  • This issue was extensively debated in the discussion thread headed "IEng Discontinued" which gained nearly 350 contributions running for over a year until June 2016. Following contributions from our Past President Barry Brooks and Registration & Standards Manager Collin Sellers, this eventually dried up.  I assume that this was because most contributors accepted that the issues would be taken forward, by those better able to exert senior level influence.

For the record Engineering Council for some time described the two types of Engineer with the shorthand "different but equally valuable" but from 2008 changed its policy to describe IEng as being "part of a progression" to CEng. The IET treats both types of Engineer as equal members, but some other institutions don't. This is an emotive issue for some long-standing IEng who feel mistreated by the policy change and its consequences.
