ARE CENG AND IENG EQUAL IN STATUS

Can we say that the CEng and IEng be considered equal titles in professional status or IEng is inferior than CEng.

As the Application Form for both CEng and IEng is same.

Thank you very much for taking interest in the Engineering Technology Degree in Pakistan.

Unfortunately the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) do not ever ready to accept the Engineering Technology Degree Grads as equivalent to Engineering Degree Grads both in education and employment sectors.  PEC was initially under administrative control of Ministry of Water and Power but now it is under administrative control of Ministry of Science and Technology.  PEC is under functionally contorl of Higher Education Commission (HEC).  The role of PEC is to accredit the Engineering Degrees, register the Engineering Graduates and regulate the Engineering Profession whilst the role of the HEC is regulate the over all higher education in Pakistan and all the professional councils including PEC works under the umbrella of the HEC.  The HEC has the authority to give equivalency decisions of degrees.  The PEC had not only biased the HEC but also the Universities for admission in MS Engineering, Public Departments for recruitment on equal pay scales and promotions, Private Contrators for recruitment on equal positions etc. against the Pakistani Engineering Technology Degree Graduates.  The PEC had also been misguided the IEA Washington Accord that the PEC equally treats both Engineering and Engineering Technology professions.

The B.Tech Pass and B.Tech Hons Degrees were launched in Pakistan on the same lines as in India.  At that time, both in India and Pakistan, both B.Sc Engineering and B.Tech Hons Degrees were declared equivalent degrees but right after few years,  Pakistan i.e. PEC had refused to accept the equivalency.  On the other hand, India is still recognizing its B.Tech Hons Degree as equivalent as B.Sc Engineering Degree.  That is why, now most of the B.Tech Hons Degree Graduates in Pakistan are constrained to do their jobs at lower scales, promotions and benefits are blocked,  Universities have refused to give admission in MS Engineering,  M.Tech or MS Technology Programs are not launched by the Universities etc. etc.  All is due to the discriminative behaviour/attitude of the PEC.

Initially, the Engineering Technology Community of Pakistan were demanding from the PEC and HEC equivalent status but due to continuous misbehave of PEC,  the ET Community has demanded their separate professional council (proposed name Pakistan Technology Councill PTC) under the Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST).  but instead of PTC, our separate Accreditation Council named National Technology Council (NTC) has been established and started functioning under the HEC.

Now the NTC is designing the new Service Structure for Engineering Technologist (new Cadre) in Pakistan.  Hoping that soon it will be implemented in all Public and Private Sectors.  The Curricula of All Engineering Technology Degrees are being revised and being implemented in all Public and Private Sector Universities.  NTC is also in continuous discussion with the PEC, MoST, HEC, Employers and Universities for quality education and due rights of ET Graduates of Pakistan.  All the ET Community is expecting a lot from the NTC.

It is worth mentioning here that the Pakistan has realised the profession and cadre of the Engineering Technologist as already implemened at USA, Malaysia, Australia etc.  Both the Engineeirng and Engineering Technology Degrees are four years professional degrees.  one will go to Washington Accord and other to Sydney Accord soon.  The fact is that the ET community has been suffering a lot in Pakistan due to the E community (PEC) un-necessarily and due to fudalism.  PEC has forced all related oraganizations to recruit the Engineers on all kind of Engineering and Technology positions by occupying the majority of positions for Engineering Technologists.  When legally asked to the PEC abou it, PEC always reply in written that it is up to the employers and universities...  isn't a rediculous move???

    Thank you.
