I make an assumption here that the person suggesting this has only a 2:1 (please correct me if I am wrong).
It is common, and natural behaviour to belittle something that you do not have. It starts with City & Guilds Lv 3 qualified technicians belittling at those doing HNCs, ("what does he need that for"), and so on.
Also amusing to read that those with Firsts are "nerds". Well if you define a nerd as somebody more academically able than yourself, then I suppose they are nerds. I take it as a compliment.
People gain First class degrees for a variety of reasons. Some are very intelligent and it is easy for them. Some work damned hard. Some want to achieve the best they possibly can. These attributes are attractive to employers.
