Event registration and CPD

Bearing in mind the new CPD recording requirements, and the fact that we enter the number of CPD hours applicable when we enter a new event on the system, shouldn't we tie in registration for an event (and actual attendance) with the career manager record? If I register to attend an event listing 2 hours CPD value, and am ticked off as having attended, it should automatically feed the event title & hours into my Career Manager record.

It would help encourage members to register rather than just turning up on the day. Implementing it would probably blow a few fuses in the IET IT department.

I've just been asked to handwrite & post a CPD certificate, which the recipient will then have to record. Time to get up to date? We are a technology institution, this shouldn't be out of our reach.

    Hi Alex,

I have proposed this myself and enquired on behalf of the TPN governance group. I am a member of the CMI and they have this capability - it captures everything you do on their website and then offers to add it to your record whenever you log back on to their CPD application. I think it's excellent!

I'll ask for the right person to give a response.
  • Extremely sensible suggestion.

Than you for your suggestion.  Given sufficient funding, virtually anything is possible:  at the moment, however, we have challenges financing vital upgrades to Career Manager.   Also, it only takes one or two minutes to add details of an event attended to Career Manager and Events and Seminars from all sources make up less than 20% of our Members’ CPD records, so the percentage of IET events will be much smaller.  Members would still then have to go into the system to add Reflection to the CPD record.  Given the minimal impact this suggested change would have on CPD recording overall, it is not high on our list of potential system upgrades, but it does remain on our “wish list”.   CPD certificates, by the way, are not requireby the IET to record your CPD although a lot of members like them.

  • David, many thanks for your reply: it's nice to know that 'HQ' is listening!

I've just spent considerably more than two minutes handwriting a CPD certificate and addressing an envelope, at the request of one of our lecture attendees. Much better that I tick him off in our registratiuon system as having actually attended, and have it appear on his CPD record. I find this response a little disappointing.

Alex, I'm sorry you find my response disappointing but it does clarify the situation as it exists.  We do not have the funds to instigate every upgrade suggested to us, and the realtively small proportion of IET members' CPD which is made up of internal events and courses does not at present make such a change viable.
  • I'm curious what the other 80% comprises, although this is a little off topic. We do seem to suffer from somewhat lacklustre web tools, which reflect poorly upon us as a 'technology' institution.

    According to our current stats:

    Work Experience:                        31%

    Self-Study:                                  23%

    Training courses                          18%

    Seminars and networking events  18%

    Vounteering                                 11%

The IET website is currently under review and I hope you will notice improvements over the next 12 months.

"Work experience"? We are struggling to encourage our audiences to use the events registration system, and having a feed into Career Manager would add a useful motivation. If the IET is serious about CPD, this feature would offer significant benefits.
