IEng Application Process

HI all,

I have more than 20years of professional experiences. Presently I am working towards my IEng application.During my IEng application process I have noticed 'Development action plan'. Can any one help what does it mean? Is it same as CPD? What type of development action we required to present.

Regards,

Sanjeev
  • Hi Sanjeev,

Your Development Action Plan (DAP) can be uploaded alongside your application in Career Manager as a supporting document and you should also take a copy to be handed in on the day of your interview (for IEng).

It does show your Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and doesn't need to be from work if you don't have a separate system, as you can use Career Manager to build it.

The key point is  about identifying and prioritising your development needs and opportunities for what you want to do in the next six to twelve months after you gain professional registration.

For example, you may wish to move into engineering management, this may require you to gain an MBA, or you may wish to apply for Chartered Manager or Chartered Engineer as a next step. Obviously this will be personal to you based on your own career goals.  It is an opportunity to show how you have demonstrated planning, and recording of your CPD.  Any previous development would be showen in your application form, alongside your Training or Career History, but this gives you a chance to show how you are already planning the next steps in your development.

    I hope that helps.

    Kind Regards,

  • Hi Kathryn Bain,

Thanks for the reply. My present company have a online CPD recording system. Is it worth if i take print of my past CPD record and upload it in 'Development action plan'. I started recording the CPD in career manager as well. My future plan will be CEng after IEng. Please advise.

    Regards,

    Sanjeev
  • I tried to use the Career Manager.  But couldn't make it do anything useful and gave up.  Instead, I just did a word processor document with a table in it.  The headings for the six columns in the table were:
    • Objective

    • Priority

    • Activities required to achieve objective

    • Support, resources or prerequisites required to achieve objective

    • Short, medium or long-term goal

    • Status of objective

Having done that, I made up some development objectives to put in it, and filled out the columns for each of the objectives.  Achieving CEng would be an obvious objective, but you can add in any other ones you think you need to become a better engineer.

The point of this table is to show that you have thought out how you want to progress in the future, while CPD shows what you have already done.  I was never asked about CPD in the IEng interview.
  • Sanjeev,

It may be useful to take a copy of your company CPD record along with you to interview, but as Simon has said, it is the forward planning after IEng that they are interested in seeing.  You can complete this in Career Manager using CPD Objectives, or a simple word document or similar is sufficient.

    Kind Regards,

    Kathryn

During the application process, my mentor advised as below :-

"Bear in mind that there are 17 competency elements under UK-SPEC you must fulfil in order to become CEng or IEng."

I need to provide adequate evidences to cover the 17 competency points.

Can I know what is the 17 competency elements ?

    Thank you.
  • Hi, you can find them in UK-SPEC itself, clearly set out.  You can download UK -SPEC at https://www.engc.org.uk/ukspec

  • In UKSPEC, it's the competencies A1, A2, B1, B2 and so on up to E5.
