Registration of Foreigners (not living in UK) in National Registers of CEng, IEng and EngTech

Dear IET Community Members

Good Morning!

Almost every country of the world has its own professional engineering council to accredit the engineering qualifications, award licence to engineering graduates to practice and regulate the engineering profession.  As far as mutual recognition is concerned, there are several international enginering accords and agreements like Washington Accord, Sydney Accord etc. are existing to get recognize each other's qualifications and award licence to practice in other country, through opening of International Registers.  On the other hand, some countries conclude mutual agreements specifically besides the international agreements.

Forgone in view, i am unable to understand clearly that why do the ECUK open registration of CEng, IEng and EngTech in National Register for foreigners not living in UK (means residents of other countries).

Suppose!  one is from China and have engineering qualification.  He or She would prefer to get register with their own country's engineering council.  Then he or she can practice in UK through international register of Chineese Engineering Council.  Why should one apply directly to EC UK through related institution of UK for registration?  Moreover, After getting registration of ECUK, such registrant (foreigner not living in UK) have to face great difficulties to get employment in the UK or his or her own country on behalf of CEng, IEng or EngTech.  ECUK or it all licenced Institutions have to do a lot of work in this regard, otherwise, i am afraid, interest will be lost in this titles.  Instead, people will take interest only in memberships of Institutions as far as latest knowledge in conerned.

I want to know that what are the aims and objectives of ECUK to offer its registrations to foreigners (not living in UK) directly?  Do anyone know about it please...

Thanks and regards

  • Professional Registration may not be limited to citizens of the nation. The world is moving to recognizing professionals and allowing them to practice in all nations. Obviously it is important for all professionals to understand and comply to local law and regulations.

ECUK is carry out the professional registration and there is no restriction for foreigners to be registered.

Many professionals wish to be recognised overseas and so they will attempt to be professionally registered with ECUK or other similar bodies.

There is obviously an advantage when you do possess professional registration with ECUK. International recognition of ECUK is good.
