Candidate Statement in support of the nomination of Edwin Morton MIET as an Ordinary Member of the Board of Trustees

It seems as though the IET election process still has its challenges from reading posts from the lat few years.  I am sure that I, and many other candidates are not widely known.  Our organisation is widely distributed and why would I know IET Members in Milton Keynes, Maidenhead, Melbourne and Montreal, when I don't live in any of those places.  However, as this is an opportunity to say a few words about myself, I will seize it.  (Sorry if the image is a bit large, I will take a few moments to play with the file size over the next couple of days.)

As an active volunteer for 38 years and a member of Council for almost 6 years, I have served in many leadership roles including past Chair and Secretary of the Ottawa LN, Deputy Chair and Chair of Council, member of the CCT and CAT.  I am currently Chairman of the Monitoring Governance WP and member of the G4F Review Group.  I co-founded an environmentally focused “Not for Profit” 22 years ago and served as Chair for ten years, now continuing as a Director.

My professional work has included roles in the Telecommunications and High Security industries at Director, AVP and VP level. All requiring leadership, financial acumen, and a strong understanding of business strategy.  My skills include well developed written and verbal communications. I have presented papers at International Conferences. My moderation and consensus building capabilities were developed through both professional and volunteer roles.  I currently work as a Systems Architect with Correctional Service Canada in defining, designing and managing the deployment of “next generation” Security Command and Control platforms.

As a member of the BoT, I would build on my ongoing IET volunteer work.  I am passionate about the future of engineering and my goals include improving the IET’s value proposition, especially outside of the UK; increasing its brand recognition with young people; supporting STEM activities to ensure children are exposed to engineering as a career choice.

During my terms on Council I have gained an excellent understanding of how the IET “works”.  This and my other initiatives including:

  • enhancing Staff, Board, Council collaboration as “One Team”,

  • ensuring that Council Members can contribute to IET strategy and direction as part of their mandate.

  • guiding the shape and structure of Council following adoption of the G4F proposals,

position me well to be an engaged and forward-looking member of the BoT.

    Edwin,

Like Ron McMurtrie, I find the lack of interest in the discussion forum curious.  Not only are there only two posts (and ~40 views of each), but little engagement in further discussion.

We could talk amongst ourselves: such as posing the question: "where do you see the IET in five and fifteen years time?"

We could also ask where, having been encouraged to put effort into making them, are the links to the videos that some of the candidates made?  As you noted, even formatting the photographs is a challenge.

And we could further ask how we might encourage more engagement in this election process?   The IET seems to be marked by apathy or indifference on the part of 90% of its membership, but the role of engineers in society has never been more crucial.
