First line support strategy - repair or replace?

Hi All


I'm doing field service work and I'd like guidance on when to repair and when to replace.  I was on a floating gas platform recently and we had a series of thyristor, which failed short.  The choice was easy, replace the thryristors on site.  I've since had a similar installation, where the thryristor controller unit has gone totally "off".  My inclination is to replace the whole unit, since the fault would take too long to fix on site.  Dose anyone have any guidelines or papers on the economics of fix or replace?
