Sat Nav GPS week number roll over.

An email from Tom Tom offering me a “good deal” on a new Sat Nav


The GPS Week Number Rollover (WNRO) occurs every 19 years, with the next roll over taking place on 6 April 2019. Similar to odometers in older cars rolling over from 99,999 km to 0, the GPS WNRO is the resetting of the GPS calendar back to 0. 


When the calendar resets, it can cause a miscommunication between GPS satellites and GPS receiver chips. As a result, some chips in satnavs will lose the ability to process certain functions. 


What does this mean for you? It’s time to check your satnav. Depending on your device, you may need to update or upgrade.


So that is why I cannot set the the time on my Tom Tom Sat Nav!

    The WNRO occurred on April 6th at midnight, so four weeks ago. If you have not noticed any problems yet then it probably means you don't need a new Sat Nav. I remember there was a big fuss last time in late August 1999 but very few people seemed to even notice back then, though of course there were fewer with Sat Nav at the time.

    I’m not even sure how old the Sat Nav is, I’ve only ever had two and the Sat Nav does have some roads missing such as across the back of Torquay.


    I have started using a phone Sat Nav app, but on some trips still run the old Sat Nav alongside it as the navigation is generally clearer and I have had someone phone me just as I have been approaching a complicated junction which throws the app off the phone screen.


    I suppose I can bite the bullet and buy a new dedicated Sat Nav.

    Out of curiosity, I got my old Garmin GPS 76 (which is at least twenty years old) out of the back of the drawer to see if it still worked correctly after the latest GPS week number rollover.


    To my surprise - it it still working fine, having now been through at least one one and possibly two GPS week number rollovers!

    My Sat Nav will still navigate, but it won’t hold the time setting despite me entering the correct time manually or display the estimated arrival times.
