Control Panel Ergonomics

Dear Learned Community,

I am sure that I have previously seen referenced in some sort of standard about the mounting height of control panel equipment i.e. approximate mounting height of an HMI, operator controls etc. from grade level.

Obviously there is no such thing  as a standard height operator or user, but I understand that there is a range; and I am currently dealing with a panel builder who has made a mounting frame for a control panel where the frame only has the HMI ~1000mm from the ground level and I would like to quote some form of standards reference to them about the requirements. Maybe they have only done work for Willy Wonka before?

Can anybody please point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance.

  • Hi, you could look at the DDA standards for heights of switches and actuators, alternatively you could take a "human factors" view and look at the ergonomic anthropometric data, we have previously been advised that Def Stan 00-25 is a source for these and looking at the 5th centile female and 95th centile male you have some reach and sightline information. Reach heights are 1047 to 1743mm (in the version we had at the time, may not be current) for reach with a 50deg pinch grip and 1351 to 1712mm for sightlines. So for both sightline and grip you would take the 1351 to 1712mm heights.

It's worth checking the up to date numbers but this might help as a source of information.
