Quality Assurance Committee on CPD requirement

Published: 01/11/2018

All Engineering Council registrants are committed to maintaining and enhancing their competence, which means undertaking Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

From 1 January 2019, licensed members will be required to sample their registrants’ CPD and sampling activity will become part of the licence review process.
Professionally active registrants who persistently do not respond to or engage with requests for CPD records from their institution risk removal from the Engineering Council Register.

  • We're only required to put down 30 hours a year of CPD.  In many years, if I put down training courses, seminars and IET local group lectures, I can hit that 30 hours.  This is nice and easy to do.  My main problem is forgetting to go back and write something in the "reflection" bit before I have forgotten what the training was.

I don't bother putting down every New Scientist article I read during my lunch breaks, or any other stuff that is a bit vague or nebulous.

That said, if my employer doesn't send me on a reasonably substantial (3 or 4 day) course in any given year, I may end up scrabbling around for things to put down.
