Multiple Voluntary Roles

Hi

I would like to help on grooming people to become chartered engineers

Can i give my support in following 3 roles?

a. IPRA

b. Industry Representative

c. Registration Assessor

What i mean is can i play all 3 roles mention above or one at a time

For an example, if i select as an IPRA, i won't be able to play another role for 3 years

Please help
  • Hi,

You can fulfil more than one role. For instance I am a PRA and an Industry Representative and I know others who are PRA and Assessors or Interviewers (possibly more). The only restriction is that you should not be a PRA/Industry Representative/Assessor/Interviewer dealing with the same candidate at different stages of the process, so if you advise a candidate you should not then be their Assessor nor their Interviewer, with the Assessor/Interviewer roles also being mutually exclusive. You can however simultaneously be Adviser for one candidate, Assessor for a second candidate and Interviewer for a third.

  • I understood 95% of the answer. However i am yet to understand the difference of industry representatives role in the Chartered process. For other cases such as PRA, assessor and interviewer i understood what you have informed. Please enlighten me on this.
  • Hi

I can understand that the interviewer, PRA & assessor are like chains in a single process, which is CEng. So it should be independent to have an accurate result for the evaluation which is logical. But what is the role of industry representative and his part in chartered engineer process? I also became a chartered engineer very recently and I never come across a Industry representative. Further to that, is industry representative locked in to his current employer or do they visit other organizations and promote IET? It is unclear the responsibilities of Industry representative. Please enlighten me.
  • Hi,

The industry representative is to represent the IET in your own organisation, more details here https://www.theiet.org/involved/volunteering-for-the-iet/volunteer-roles/professional-registration-and-fellowship-roles/industry-representative/

As I understand it, it is not a formal part of the registration process, it is more to promote the IET, membership and professional registration within your organisation. There's certainly no conflict with any of the other roles.

The only concern I would hope the IET would have is that if you volunteer for too many roles that you may find yourself under pressure trying to find enough time to manage them.

Personally I would recommend that Registration Assessor is the best starting point (not that I have ever been one!). This gives you the best insight into the professional registration process.

    Thanks,
